SEE THE LIGHT is the newest song on the album SHOT OF BLUE. It’s about a man who is lost and wandering, and a woman who loves him says,

“If you see the light, come home.

If you see the light, come home to me.”

Home has deep meanings for me. I never really had one until I was in my 30s. My dad was in the Marine Corps, and we moved every two years. I was born on a military base in North Carolina but only lived there for a year. By the time I was seventeen, I’d lived in three different states, seven cities, and one foreign country.

You don’t really think about it as a kid. You just pack up, leave whatever friends you had, and start all over again. You don’t know any different, so it seems normal. The first time I noticed something odd was when I was twelve, and we were moving back east from California. I remember looking out the back window of the car and seeing my best friend standing in our front yard waving goodbye.

I never saw him again.

I used to have dreams about wandering through strange neighborhoods at night, trying to find some recognizable landmark that would help me find my way home. My wife, Jane, came from a small town in Vermont. I’ll never forget my first visit there with her. Everyone knew her; she knew every street, every store and every house where all her friends still lived.

I couldn’t comprehend it. It was nothing I’d ever experienced. It was like being in a Frank Capra movie.

“If you see the light,” she said, “Come home.

If you see the light, come home.

Come home to me.”
